You’ve built a subscription box people actually want. The problem is that you’re now spending the last week of every month surrounded by product, crinkle paper and a tape gun, wondering when you last did any actual marketing.
That’s the moment most founders start searching for subscription box fulfilment in Australia. And what they find is a wall of 3PL websites that all look the same: pallet minimums, per-pick fees, a 12-month contract and a sales rep who won’t call back until you’re shipping five thousand units a month.
There’s another option! Here’s how Betty’s boutique kitting compares, so you can pick the right partner for where your box is right now.
The two ways to get your box out the door
A traditional 3PL is a warehouse built for volume. Product comes in on pallets, gets picked by scanner, packed by machine (or by someone paid to move fast), taped and sent. It’s built for high volume – for a business shipping ten thousand identical orders a month and don’t care about paying top dollar for lack of attention to presentation, inventory management or that personal touch that your members see at the other end.
A boutique kitting house is built to be a true partnership for your subscription box needs. Your drop is assembled by hand, one box at a time, the way you’d do it yourself if you didn’t need to worry about scaling your business. Inserts neatly placed in the box, crinkle or tissue paper for premium vibes – the unboxing looks the way your Instagram promised it would.
3PL and boutique kitting are different services built for different client wants and needs.
Cost: per-kit fees vs one flat rate
This is where most subscription founders get burnt.
A 3PL quote usually looks manageable until you read the schedule. Receiving fee. Storage per pallet per week. Pick fee per item. Pack fee per box. Insert fee. Label fee. Kitting surcharge, because a subscription box isn’t a “standard order”. By the time a 1,000-box drop lands, the invoice has more line items than your box has products.
Boutique kitting at Betty+Co is one flat monthly rate. Your drop is assembled and dispatched, and the number on the invoice is the number we agreed. No per-touch, no per-label, no surprise “handling” line. You even get a very impressive discount if you supply the shipping labels for us simple apply to your boxes for sending.
Run your own numbers on Betty’s pricingcalculator – it only takes about a minute and shows how much you’ll save – likely thousands each month.
Betty’s model is designed to literally save you up to 50% off – or more – what a typical 3PL would charge.
Minimums: pallets vs fifty boxes
Most Australian 3PLs won’t engage below pallet volumes. If you’re at 800 subscribers, you’re not a customer to them yet.
We take drops from 50 boxes up to 3,000. On average, most of our partners sit at around 900 to 1,500 boxes per monthly drop. We know you need to start somewhere, so even at 50 boxes, we’re here to help you focus on scaling your business. Our rates are so low, it doesn’t make sense for you to do any kitting at all! It’s what Betty’s here for 🙂
Assembly: machine pack vs hand kitting
A subscription box lives or dies on the unboxing. Subscribers are paying for the feeling of opening it, not just the contents.
3PL packing is optimised for speed. That’s the right priority for a pair of shoes. It’s the wrong priority for a box with brochures, crinkle paper and six products that need to sit in a specific order for that unboxing moment.
Hand kitting means the layout you plan is the layout that arrives. Most of our partners simply send a short video of how they want the drop to look and we match it. Others have been with us long enough to say “you know what we like” and get on with their month. Either way, we send videos of your boxes being packed so you see what your members get. Which bring us to….
The process: getting it done vs working together
- 3PL’s would rarely – if ever – send you videos of the kitting process as it’s being done. Betty does.
- 3PL’s don’t care about your socials. Betty does.
- 3PL’s don’t like ‘book swaps’ or different box types. Betty does.
3PL’s just want to do the job and get paid for it,. They also charge alot for the ‘privilege’ of having them take kitting off your hands.
At Betty, We know you want to promote your drop being prepared and the care taken while doing so. We are known for sending through videos as we pack your kits.
We know you are probably in a completely different state and want to see what’s going on with your drop. We will always make sure you feel at ease and know what’s going on with video footage and pics. Even in our busiest periods, we find time to send a video so you can see what we’re doing for you.
We know you want social media content every month so your members stay engaged. As a courtesy, we always try to grab vids and pics throughout your drop for use on your socials.
We know you might have different members with different box needs. Got 500 members for a standard box type, 120 premium members with an additional item in the box, and 45 new members with a free gift included? We’ve got you.
Commitment: 12-month lock-in vs month-to-month
- A subscription business changes fast. You might double subscribers in a quarter, or pivot the box entirely. A 12-month 3PL contract doesn’t care.
- Betty+Co is month-to-month. Partners stay because the work is immaculate, not because a contract says they have to.
How a monthly drop actually runs with Betty
Founders often assume outsourcing means losing control. In practice, it’s the opposite: you finally get visibility on something that used to happen at 11pm on your dining table.
- Stock arrives through the month. Your suppliers ship straight to our Melbourne warehouse, ready for your upcoming drop. You’re not receiving, unpacking or storing anything!
- Your drop gets a dedicated slot. Every partner is allocated a slot, dedicated only to their drop. Your boxes aren’t squeezed in between someone else’s job. We dedicate an entire slot to it.
- We kit to your brief. Video, photo or “same as last month” – we build to it.
- We dispatch direct to your subscribers. At the time of writing, every one of our partners takes advantage of our heavy discount applied if they provide the shipping labels, so we kit your boxes, apply the labels you send to us, and we arrange the dispatch out to your members.
Then it’s off your plate until next month. It’s as simple as that.
Why we deliberately cap the number of partners
This is the bit that surprises people: we genuinely don’t take everyone.
We are not a 3PL. We are a boutique kitting house, with finite hands and finite floor. The only way to guarantee every drop gets our full attention and high level of care is to limit how many drops we run. So we cap partners, and when a spot opens it usually doesn’t stay open long.
If you’re currently packing your own box and you’re somewhere between 50 and 3,000 subscribers, it’s worth a conversation before the next spot goes.
Which one is right for your box?
- Go with a traditional 3PL if you’re shipping high volumes of simple, standardised orders, presentation isn’t a selling point, and you can commit to a 12-month contract at pallet scale.
- Go with boutique kitting if your unboxing is part of the product, you’re between 50 and 3,000 boxes a drop, you want one predictable monthly cost, and you’d rather not sign your business away for a year – although – of course – once you’ve experienced the ‘Betty Effect’ we know you’ll stay with us forever 😉
